To enable the tracking code to start recording details about visitors to your website, you will need to install it by using one of the methods below.

Please note that you should not add the tracking code to the <head> of your website because it won’t work that way!

Google Tag Manager

Pasting directly into the body of the website code

Google Tag Manager

If you already have Google Tag Manager installed then you just need to install this tracking code there.

This video takes you through adding your tracking code via Google Tag Manager.   Please follow every step in the video otherwise your tracking code won’t work correctly:

Pasting directly into the body of the website code

You may ask your website developer to copy/paste your tracking code directly into the body of each page of your website, so that it is within all current pages, and is automatically included in new pages that are created in the future.

You may also wish to do this yourself.

In either case, it should be a quick process, and you wouldn’t need to manually add it to each individual page.

The tracking code needs to be positioned anywhere between the opening <body> and closing </body> tags within each page of your website.  Ideally, the code would be pasted as near to after the opening <body> tag as possible.

Please do not add the tracking code to the <head> area of your website because it won’t work in there.

Simply copy your tracking code and paste it into the appropriate place within the body of your website.

To test this has worked:

  1. Go to your website and click on several pages.
  2. Then log into your account and go to Filters – All Visitors from the top navigation bar.
  3. You should see your path through your website pages.
  4. If you don’t see your path, please do let me know so that I can assist you further.

You can also contact me if you’d like me to check it’s working correctly.

WordPress footer

Some WordPress installations aren’t clear about where the footer is and although it’s just a case of pasting your tracking code into that footer, it’s not always easy to find!

If you have a web developer then it’s normally easier to ask them to just add your tracking code to the WordPress footer.

If you are doing this yourself then you may need to check that your web developer has given you full admin access rights to your website because they sometimes don’t do that (so that you don’t accidentally break anything!).

If you would like help to set this up yourself, please do let me know and we’ll set up a screenshare call to take you through the setup process.
